Late Winter Concert

St. John's, Smith Square
28 February 2023 - 7:30pm

Vaughan Williams suggested that a better title for his A London Symphony might be Symphony by a Londoner – while it is evocative of the composer’s adopted home city, its depth and emotional resonance make it far more than just a musical portrait. Elgar’s tone poem In the South, inspired by "the thoughts and sensations of one beautiful afternoon in the Vale of Andora", and the overture to the "first important Hungarian opera" by Ferenc Erkel (composer of the Hungarian national anthem) complete the programme.
